There is a corner of the internet focused solely on self-development and habit tracking, and these are commonly found in the study and productivity communities on YouTube. It's filled with all sorts of different apps or handwritten 'bullet journals' to prioritize tasks and track your habits; if you have stumbled upon this, it can come across as tedious and overwhelming. And that doesn't even scratch the surface of techniques that you can find in the abundance of self-help books and podcasts.

If you want to be someone who finally gets his life together and you are aware that there is much to learn from this corner of the internet but aren't sure what to do first or where to start, then don't fret. Here's a simple guide to get you started on leveling up your skills in your self-development journey!

Learn to reflect

It's easy enough to watch a person's self-development story online and try to pattern your life over what they've done, thinking that you'll get the same results, but that's not the case. Everyone's life is different, and we all have different sets of responsibilities and priorities.

Many might not think of it at first, but reflecting can be a skill, especially when actively practiced. Reflecting may be expressed in many ways, but the easiest way is to get into the habit of journaling. You don't need to write long, complicated passages; just start with what you feel and write for as much as you want. The takeaway from this practice is to get a clearer picture of yourself as you go.

Accept that Excel isn't so scary!

There is a wide array of productivity apps online, and all have several uses, and it can be overwhelming choosing which one to go with. But let's stick with the basics, Excel is something pre-installed in your laptops, or you can opt for Google Sheets, its online counterpart. This is as basic as it can get, and it isn't that complicated when you mold it to how you want it to work.

There are tons of easy and intuitive templates to start your habit tracking journey using Excel or Google Sheets. It doesn't have to be anything fancy or complicated, and the focus is on simple functionality; everything else design related can be added later on.

Read more books or listen to them!

If you were once a reader that read through pages of a book in a night but somehow as you grew older, the energy for reading has faded. Take this as a challenge to commit back to reading! But since this isn't always the most comfortable habit to get back into, we suggest looking into the beauty of audiobooks! There has been a surge of people listening to audiobooks because it helps keep the mind engaged. Treat them as training wheels when you get back into the habit of reading. You can spend a couple of chapters listening to the audiobook in the background as you do chores, then jump back into the book when you can sit down and read. There's a bit of a learning curve, but the audiobook can help hold your attention.

If you're unsure about audiobooks or haven't thought of a book to listen to just yet, podcasts are another source of learning new skills while you do work or chores. There are a lot of self-development podcasts that are easily accessible through platforms such as YouTube and Spotify. Just give them a try to see what you like. The takeaway with this one is to foster a new habit that stimulates you into new learning experiences.

Track your finances (and eventually build up your credit score)

Integrating with #2, create a tracker for your finances! Once you have gotten your bank account, keep track of all your spending! You can also think of opening another account and treating it as a piggy bank; one is strictly not to be touched, while the other is where you access your budget.

Tracking your spending is a good habit that exercises your decision-making skills. And in the long-term, it helps you grow your finances. These can be done with a simple addition or subtraction formula in Excel or Google sheets. If you don't have a frugal mindset, just yet this can help get you started. When you track your spending, you see where you stand financially; this can help you save more because it exposes your spending patterns.

Connected to this is eventually getting a credit card! Some are afraid of getting a credit card because they say it is just debt waiting to happen but, the best answer to dispute this claim is that you should be responsible in knowing how to spend within your means, and the most significant long term plan with getting a credit card is to start building up your credit score.

When it comes to needing to file for a loan, for example, let's say a house or a condo, the bank will look at your credit score, and this is the score that determines how well a person pays their debt on time. It shows just how trustworthy and responsible they are with their finances so that eventually, the bank will be willing to loan a person more money when they request it. So, how do you get a credit score? By getting a credit card!

Altogether these are no-fuss, straightforward, and actionable steps towards leveling up your life skills for your long-term development. Taking the first few steps towards any of these tips, in the end, requires commitment for the long haul. It can be easy to get caught up in the aesthetics or the idea of a 'pretty' future, but the hard work that goes behind it falls on your shoulders; you create a lot for yourself a reality when you work on it now.
