Moving to a new condo neighborhood can make you feel anxious at times. It’s a whole new environment, ambiance, and of course, a whole set of new neighbors you have to deal with. You might think that it’s okay to not talk to your neighbors, that you can live without talking to anybody in the neighborhood, but a great relationship with your condo neighbors makes the whole community a much better place to live in. Your neighbors can be your immediate source of help during emergencies, a companion, or even become a lifelong friend.

However, sometimes approaching a stranger in a new neighborhood can be a daunting challenge. So as you prepare to move into your new home, these tips could help you break the ice and start a wonderful relationship with your condo community.

Smile at your neighbors

Don’t underestimate the power of a simple smile; this tiny gesture can push you off to a great start. People judge you the first time they come in contact with you, so smiling for the first time you meet someone is a great way to show them you’re friendly and approachable.

Give them a soft smile or a nod when you encounter them in the elevator or in the hallway. Your cheerful glow would eventually lead them to become more comfortable with you around.

Cook or bake something for them

Filipinos love to eat, and a good way to win their attention, of course, is food. If you feel uneasy inviting them to your unit for a meal, giving them some cooked meals or even baked pastries is a nice gesture to start a conversation with them. They are more likely to return the good deed, and you can get to know each other even better.

Invite them for a meal

If you feel completely comfortable inviting them to your unit, that would be a better way to spark a great relationship with your neighbors. Cook them a special meal, be a good host, and communicate openly so they will feel comfortable to be more open to you as well.

Lend them a hand

There’s nothing more genuine than a neighbor who helps you out when in need so extend a helping hand when you notice they need it. It can be as simple as helping them carry their groceries to their unit or assisting the elderly. When they see you being helpful to everybody, they are more likely to return the favor to you when you are the one needing help.

Give them a compliment

People love a good compliment, especially if it’s genuine. Notice the good things about them and let them know about these in a nice way. It could be as simple as how you love that sign on their door or how you think their hair looks great. This is always a nice way to start a conversation with them.

Be considerate

Being considerate with your neighbors and being a responsible condo dweller is also important. Don’t make too much noise, follow all the rules of the condo, respect their spaces, and follow the garbage collection scheme. You don’t want to be known as the inconsiderate neighbor, and much worse, the rulebreaker. Abiding by the rules and being sensitive to your neighbors makes you more approachable and easy to get along with.

Spend time at recreational areas

Condominiums and townships all have these common recreational places where most of the condo residents spend their time like the swimming pool, the park, the gym, and the playground. Taking a walk and spending some time in these recreational spaces can help you meet more people and talk casually to them.
